Deportation of Children

8th April 2021

The Office of the Commissioner for Children was deeply concerned when it was reported that “Non-EU families appealing the deportation of their children are receiving letters from Identity Malta, asking them to leave the country “as soon as possible”.” Especially since this goes against the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child which clearly states that children should be cared for by their parents.

However, the Office welcomes the Government’s reaction to the letters sent by Identity Malta and agrees that this was extremely insensitive especially in this time of uncertainty. The Office urges all entities and organisations to take decisions keeping children’s rights in mind so as to ensure that a similar situation does not happen again.
